Agro tourism is one of the alternative forms of tourism, which seek to avoid creating negative and positive social, cultural and environmental impacts.
The Greek practice and relevant literature on the topic, summarizing a conceptual definition of the term “agro tourism” as follows: It is that tourist activity grows in non-urban area by employees, mainly in the primary and secondary sector and in particular family or cooperative units for small tourism goods and services to enhance farm income and the local economy, both the exploitation of tourist accommodation (apartments, pensions, hostels, camping), and the supply of tourist facilities with local produce agricultural cooperatives.
Greece is a country with a favorable location, four-season climatic conditions and long-time traditions in agriculture. The countryside is flecked with constantly changing scenes – from golden wheat fields, strong maize, bright-yellow rape and spirit-rising sunflowers to lush meadows, fresh dense forests, majestic mountain peaks and welcoming seaside shores. The natural diversity creates ideal conditions for stock-breeding, presented by cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry.
The pride of Greece is the high-quality production of olives and olive oil, pure Greek Yoghurt, unique feta cheese and exuberant wines.
Also some special products as Krokos Kozanis (Safran), mushroom, chestnut and different kind of home-made raki (rakomelo, tsikoudia, tsipouro) All these agricultural features are perfectly complemented by deserving-to-be-seen historical sites, magnificent natural landmarks and free-hearted hospitality.
The dominant forms of tourism at the international level are the holidays on farms and holiday cottages (cottages) located within the rural settlement.
Greece in the large urban diaspora, with the Polynesian setting with decentralized monumental topography, the changing landscape, with the morphological contrasts and of the diversified climatic conditions, satisfies the requirements for developing a broad-scale forms of tourism.
These forms can be classified into two categories:
In villages of outstanding natural beauty (mountain and not) that attract visitors, exploiting the beauty of their location.
On islands or coastal areas which exploit mainly the summer sun and the sea.
In traditional communities who have to show a distinct architecture that attracts a resident of concrete urban centers.
Near protected areas like national parks and wetlands, which in addition to natural beauty, undertake to enrich visitors’ knowledge on ecology issues.
Lodgings cooperative, where members of cooperatives, mostly women offer their own products or local produce and hospitality.
All these forms of tourism in Greece are located in rural areas, types of accommodation rooms are mostly in the rural family home or accommodations which are an extension of the residence or dwelling regardless of the end rooms, so that the independence of privacy residents and visitors.
